the underdog's American dream -a poem

Posted on May 6th, 2008 by Mikey_Dee : A hoot and The frumious Bandersnatc Mikey_Dee
When you're the underdog, people are on your side in books & movies and in all kinds of fiction,
while in reality , your life is fraught with frightful friction,
And this is reality
oh yes in real life they set fire to your tail and
kick you in the ribs under the table,
till you want to bite them
but you're just not able
'cause you know it would hurt them,
like they hurt you
with their matches, their sticks & the pointed toe of a shoe,
in real life when you kiss the handsome prince,
he turns into a frog, or a toad or even something worse,
and your life isn't like a poem,
just some silly litle verse.
Even though if your life were morelike a movie,
you would be on a poster,
and people would find you cute,
and when you'd finally make it
they'd tell you " we always  knew it"
And your life wouldn't be at all pathetic,
it might have a tiny tinge of pure pathos
And you'd probably get adoptedby a blind child in need of affection,
or , for a child with Cancer, you'd be the perfect answer,
Or a child with something dramatic, like polio or multiple scelerosis
or some little-known blood disease
or maybe the victim of an accidenton the highway, or maybe even on the freeway.
In California, or someplace quite exotic
like in the southern Pacific,
where life would be just terrific,
or maybe someplace magic,
where glitter & glamour would replace the tragic.
Where people would know how to be kind,
and there'd be few of the other kind,
They'd make remarks on your shiny coat,
and even if you had fleas they'd know it,
but still they would pat you on the head,
and life would be happy instead.

Mike, I like this a lot. I like the stream-of-consciousness-feel it has to it, this poem, following a thread that takes it many unexpected places. But most I like the beginning. Such a great insight, very thought provoking:

When you’re the underdog, people are on your side in books & movies and in all kinds of fiction, while in reality , your life is fraught with frightful friction…

I really enjoy watching your unusual mind floating on the initial idea. The part about the children touches me a lot - the whole piece feels on the edge - balancing on the edge of the abyss…

Much love,
Gabriele

Why thank you Gabriele, being on the edge is an interesting choice for me
